Ross followed Calvin home and pulled up behind him in the driveway. He got out and walked to Calvin’s car, helping him out. The front door opened and a woman stared at them as they came up the sidewalk.
“Hi, Mom. I tried calling you,” Calvin called out.
“I just got your message. Is everything okay? Who is this?”
“Nice to meet you, I’m —” Ross began.
“This is Ross Collins, Cole’s boyfriend.” Calvin waggled his eyebrows. “I had some problems with my car and Ross was nice enough to come rescue me.”
“Well, wasn’t that nice of you! Thank you for helping my son, Mr. Collins.”
“Call me Ross, please. It’s a pleasure to meet you, ma’am.” Ross shook her hand lightly.
“Please, call me Carrie.”
Calvin grinned at his mom’s reaction to Ross. Her cheeks were flushed pink.
“Um, so you want to come in for a drink before you head out?” Calvin asked.
“Just water will be fine; I don’t want to put anyone out.” Ross waited for them to enter the house and then stepped in behind them, shutting the door.
“So what is it you do, Ross?” Carrie asked.
“He’s a military guy, Mom. Special Forces.” Calvin beamed.
“Oh, really?” Carrie walked into the kitchen and grabbed a glass of water. “How long have you been in the military, Ross?”
“About nine years.” Ross took the glass of water and sipped it.
“So,” Carrie sat down and motioned to the chair on the other side of the kitchen table. “How long have you and Cole known each other?”
“Almost a year now, but it wasn’t until recently we began dating.”
The front door slammed and Ross stiffened on alert. Calvin leaned in and whispered.
“That’s my dad.”
Ross set his glass of water down and stood up. When Cole had come to his house after the family dinner, he’d been hurt and upset. Ross was curious to know what kind of man Cole’s father was.
He had been taken in and treated with love by Jonas Brooks after rogues killed his parents. He wanted Cole to have the same thing from his own father. Parents should love their child no matter what. Ross knew if his parents had lived, they’d be all right with his sexual preference.
A man about the same height as Cole walked into the kitchen and stopped. He looked from Ross to Carrie to Calvin before coming back to Ross. The blue eyes narrowed and the man set his briefcase down.
“Colton, this is Ross Collins —”
“Cole’s boyfriend,” Calvin blurted.
Ross extended his hand and waited. Colton stood in front of him with a wary look.
“Boyfriend, eh?”
“Yes, boyfriend.” Ross kept his hand out. Colton seemed to eye it, then slipped his own hand in and shook firmly. Ross applied a bit of pressure all while keeping a smile on his face. “Nice to meet you, Mr. Ryker.”
“Ross is Special Forces,” Calvin grinned.
Ross let go of the man’s hand and stood his ground. Colton shook his hand out and Ross tried to hide his grin. He may have applied just a bit more force than normal in the handshake.
